The Sweet Hollow Mission Page

While the Presbyterian Church of Sweet Hollow has a history of reaching out to those in need, it has been through a variety of internal groups such as the United Presbyterian Women (UPW) or the Sunday School program.  In response to a desire to more intentionally broaden the mission outreach aspect of the church, the Mission Team was formed in the spring of 2004.

Over the course of that year, the Team organized and held an educational and fundraising forum for Women for Afghan Women (WAW) supporting the growth of new schools and cottage industry in Afghanistan.  The event included a panel discussion and a bazaar featuring Afghan arts and crafts and food.  The Mission Team raised over $3000.00 for WAW that day and remains committed to the organization, which especially brings aid to women and children.

Additionally, the Mission Team sponsored the 1st Annual Mission Craft Fair in October of 2004 with the proceeds benefiting local individuals as well as local and global organizations.

The Mission Team was formed in the spring of 2004 with the object of more intentionally broadening the mission outreach aspect of the Presbyterian Church of Sweet Hollow.  We had always had a history of reaching out to those in need, but now are ever more connected in an ongoing way with organizations and agencies in our own Huntington community and beyond.

We have several organizations that we are particularly dedicated to: 1) Huntington Station Enrichment Center (Boys and Girls Club), an organization that we support through ongoing financial donations, campaigns for school supplies and healthy snacks and other means; 2) the Community Food Council, an organization that we collect canned and non-perishable foods on an ongoing basis, but also hold several “sharing bag” drives for throughout the year; 3) Huntington Interfaith Homeless Initiative (HIHI), a “floating” shelter which we provide volunteers and food for once every four weeks; and 4) Nourish the Children, an organization that provides Vitameal, a nutritious porridge-like oatmeal, to starving children worldwide.  We also donate on an ad hoc basis to individuals and organizations as we become aware of specific needs and are always open to new ideas and ministries and they are brought before our committee’s monthly meetings.

We feel called to reach out to a world in need beyond writing checks or donating monies, that we might not only be a part of the solution financially, but in the deeds we do as well.  We will be holding our 4th Annual Pumpkin Patch and Mission Fair on Sunday, October 18, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Our focus this day will be on the young families who enjoy this event, offering hay rides and other activities to supplement the pumpkin patch which will be ongoing out on our Great Lawn from the end of September through Halloween.
