The Christian Education program is a vital part of the Christian spiritual formation of our children from birth through Confirmation.  Our program runs year-round so that families may worship with us fall, winter, spring and summer while children never stop learning of Christ’s love for them.

The 2nd graders receive their Bibles.

During the regular school year, the Presbyterian Church of Sweet Hollow runs the exciting Workshop Rotation Program for children five years of age and above.  With the exception of the first Sunday of the month, the children start their morning in worship with their parents.  After the first Scripture reading, Pastor Rebecca Segers teaches during The Time for Young People, a children’s sermon especially for them.  The children then go to their classrooms, which are designed around a special theme for each week’s lesson.  The same Scripture lesson is taught for a five-week period using different teaching methods each week.  Accordingly, the children learn about the same lesson through drama, puppetry, large muscle physical play, arts and crafts, and music.  Finally, each five-week session ends with a fun “assessment” game, based on a “real” game like Bingo or Family Feud or Football, etc. that allows the Team to assess how well the children are learning the lesson while they simultaneously have a great time in play.

On the first Sunday of the month, children begin in their Sunday School classrooms; third-grade students and older come into worship at the end of service to join in the Lord’s Supper with the congregation.  Each year in the Spring, Rev. Rebecca Segers leads a second-grade Sacrament Education class during which the second graders learn about the sacraments of baptism and communion.  This is in preparation for the special day that they join the older children and the rest of the congregation in celebrating the Lord’s Supper together.  There is also a full calendar of Special Events that occur throughout the year including the Christmas Pageant, the Pancake Breakfast, Easter Egg Hunt, and the end-of-school-year Family Picnic.

The Christian Ed Team is ably led by Elder Laura Fallon and supported by Sunday School teachers Martha Garland, Emmi Hanson, Frank Sansone, Maureen Sansone and Joan Sommermeyer.

There is a nursery staffed by Andrea Koutsaftas.  She is a trained nursery school teacher whose love for children is evident in their returned love for her.  She is supported by Sweet Hollow teenagers Sara Verma and Ayanna Williams on alternating Sundays.

For older kids, teacher Joan Sommermeyer leads a “pre-confirmation” class for the 6th, 7th and 8th graders during Sunday School and Rev. Rebecca Segers teaches Confirmation to 8th graders from the first Sunday in January through Pentecost Sunday.

Additionally, Sweet Hollow joins together annually with King of Kings Lutheran Church to hold a vibrant and growing Vacation Bible School Program.  Last year over 70 children came together to learn about God's love through games, crafts, song and story.  VBS is always held the first full week of August from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  For more information, call the church or email the pastor.
